Abstract / Description

The Building Healthy Communities (BHC) program, funded by The California Endowment (TCE), represents a novel approach to health improvement. Over 10 years, BHC has combined continuous funding in 14 historically disinvested communities with state-level and regional policy campaigns. It focuses on both the social determinants of health and power building to advance racial equity. BHC engages at the neighborhood level while using media strategies to address systemic inequities. By expanding beyond traditional health grantmaking, BHC has transformed TCE’s role and practices. The program’s impact is assessed through this report's retrospective analyses, interviews, and evaluation.
